Andrew Mainwaring

Coaching for people rebuilding after life or work has changed everything

About

I'm Andrew Mainwaring — a Certified Professional Coach (CPC), an ICF-credentialed coach (ACC), and an Energy Leadership Index Master Practitioner (ELI-MP), and the founder of theMettle.coach. I work with people whose life or work has changed them — through burnout, sustained pressure, career upheaval, serious illness, or a shift they didn't choose — and who know they can't force themselves back into who they used to be.

I know this territory personally. I'm on my own journey with advanced prostate cancer. Facing cancer didn't just affect my health — it dismantled how I saw my life, my work, and my future. Rebuilding wasn't about getting back to normal. It was about getting to know who I am now — and that experience is what led me to coaching.

Before coaching, I spent 20+ years in senior HR and leadership roles at Yahoo, Verizon Media, and AOL — guiding leaders and teams through mergers, restructurings, and high-stakes change. That experience taught me what it looks like when people are functioning on the outside but lost on the inside.

My approach follows three stages — Awareness, Resilience, and Action — grounded in iPEC's Core Energy Coaching™ and shaped by lived experience. We slow things down, make sense of what's shifted, rebuild trust in your own judgment, and move forward with purpose — without forcing it.

Just honest conversation, thoughtful structure, and steady partnership for people navigating real change.

Testimonials

I had the pleasure of working with Andrew Mainwaring as my coach, through his REBUILD program, and the experience was genuinely transformative.

Andrew has a unique ability to train awareness, not by telling you what to think, but by helping you see differently. Through our work together, I learned how to pause, raise my awareness, and reframe situations as opportunities rather than obstacles. What once felt fixed or overwhelming began to feel workable, intentional, and aligned with who I am and what I value.

His coaching helped me move beyond what was immediately in front of me and think more expansively about my career, my energy, and my choices. I gained renewed focus, clarity, and confidence, grounded in my own values rather than external expectations. Andrew creates a space that is thoughtful, challenging, and deeply respectful, one that encourages honest reflection and real growth.

If you’re looking for a coach who helps you build self-awareness, resilience, and alignment (not quick fixes), Andrew is exceptional. I’m incredibly grateful for the perspective and momentum I gained through working with him.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is this therapy?
No. This is coaching, not therapy or mental health treatment.
Coaching is forward-focused — it's about how you want to live, work, and make decisions now, especially after something has changed. Difficult emotions can be part of the work, but the focus is on clarity, resilience, and rebuilding, not clinical treatment.
How is coaching different from therapy, consulting, or mentoring?
Therapy typically focuses on healing past experiences and treating mental health conditions. Consulting gives you expert advice and solutions. Mentoring draws on someone else's experience to guide your path.

Coaching is different. I don’t diagnose, advise, or direct. Instead, I help you think more clearly, rebuild trust in your own judgment, and make grounded decisions about what comes next. You set the direction — I provide the structure, the questions, and the partnership to help you get there.

These boundaries matter to me. If something ever comes up that's outside the scope of coaching, we'll name it honestly and figure out the right support together.
Who is this work for?
People who are functioning on the outside but feel unsettled on the inside.
Many of my clients have been changed by burnout, prolonged pressure, career upheaval, serious illness, or a major life shift. They're not falling apart — they just know the old version of themselves no longer fits, and they're ready to figure out what comes next.

You don't need answers to begin. Just a willingness to slow down and be honest about where you are.
What kind of coaching do you offer?
I offer a six-month, one-on-one coaching partnership called REBUILD. It's designed for people whose identity, health, or career has fundamentally shifted — and who need space to re-orient before deciding what's next.

There are no one-off sessions or quick fixes. The work is steady, personal, and built around what’s actually happening in your life.

You can read the full details on the REBUILD page.
What are your qualifications?
I'm a Certified Professional Coach (CPC) trained through iPEC, a rigorous 320-hour program grounded in the Core Energy Coaching™ model. I also hold the Associate Certified Coach (ACC) credential from the International Coaching Federation — the global standard for ethical, professional coaching.

Before becoming a coach, I spent 20+ years in senior HR and leadership roles at Yahoo, Verizon Media, and AOL, guiding people and teams through high-stakes change. I also mentor prostate cancer patients through ZERO Prostate Cancer, serve on the executive committee for their NYC Run/Walk, and support their advocacy for national policy initiatives.
Do I need to be "ready" before starting?
No. Most people who reach out don't feel ready — and that's fine.

You don’t need certainty or a clear goal. What matters is a willingness to pause, reflect, and be honest about where you are. The work is designed to help clarity emerge, not to require it upfront.
How do I know if this is right for me?
That's what the Discovery Conversation is for.

We'll talk through what you're navigating, what you're looking for, and whether working together makes sense. If it's not the right fit, I'll say so. There's no pressure to decide anything on the call.
