About
Are you a developed Critical Thinker? Do you have an indefeasable method in which everyone could use your method for analyzing thought processes, assess the quality of those thought processes, being aware of the barriers that hijack our critical thought processes, that lead us to a character of empathy, just, and ethical proportions to become a well cultivated critical thinker?
The Problem
You would quickly realize the problem that we as humans have had throughout history that, critical reasoning has been treated, on a whole, as superficial. We could all bring to the table our subjective preference for the way we analyze, assess, monitor, and gain a good character to our person however, would our method suffice for all? Or, would we have as many subjective responses as there are milkshake flavors at the local Peter's Drive-in?
On the surface we could say that we are, and can, critically reason well however, when asked to explain in depth the concept and context of Critical Thinking, we quickly realize that in all of us and the academic studies, critical reasoning is conceptually misunderstood or ignored.
The Framework
The late Dr. Richard Paul discovered and devoted his career to develop a framework for critical reasoning to combat this very problem at issue.
The Paul/Elder Framework for Critical Thinking and it's indefeasable concepts, principles and tools will help you become a well cultivated critical thinker as we deeply understand the core parts of a whole that are present when we are reasoning through something well.
Dr. Linda Elder, Dr. Paul's wife, colleague, and President of The Foundation for Critical Thinking, continues to teach and advocate for the Paul/Elder Framework in Critical Thinking where critical thinking fellows come together and make critical thinking an explicit part of their daily personal and professional lives.
This approach is foundational in any subject, field, or domain that you want to increase the quality of your reasoning which ultimately enhances the quality of your life.
It is not based on educational percentage fears or rote memorization; it is a "matter of degree" in which you embody the framework and "Intellectually Persevere" to your goal in a higher standard of learning which brings great encouragement as you build "Confidence in Reason" ("" being just 2 of the many Intellectual Virtues you will embody").
The Result
I am a Certified Critical Thinking Foundations Coach dedicated to provide the Paul/Elder Critical Thinking Framework of concepts, principles, and tools to those whose purpose is to become a well-cultivated critical thinker to enhance the quality of reasoning in their life resulting with happiness and self-actualization.

This is my testimony. I came to the Foundation for Critical Thinking in search of a solution to a very deep complex problem that I was unable to solve but continued to ruminate within me to find a solution. Within days I applied the Paul/Elder Framework for Critical Thinking to my problem revealing the barriers that impede critical thinking and their primary forms. Frequently Asked Questions
What is the definition of Critical Thinking?
The most fundamental concept of critical thinking is simple and intuitive. All humans think. It is our nature to do so, but much of our thinking, left to itself, is biased, distorted, partial, uninformed or downright prejudiced. Unfortunately, shoddy thinking is costly, both in money and in quality of life. Critical Thinking begins, then, when we start thinking about our thinking with a view to improving it.
What does Critical Thinking entail?
Developing as a Critical Thinker entails explicitly focusing on the naturally occuring processes in your reasoning and learning to intervene in your poor-quality reasoning. It means developing a keen interest in how your mind moves cognitively from one idea to the another, in what causes these particular moves to occur rather than others, and in how to intervene in the process when flaws are uncovered in any of your thinking.
The Critical thinking approach is a self-directed, self-disciplined, self-monitored, and self-corrective thinking. There is no test other than that which you choose to discover and test in yourself.

Who developed the Paul/Elder Critical Thinking Theory?
Dedication to the Paul/Elder Framework for Critical Thinking was developed by the late Dr. Richard Paul who was a leading proponent of critical thinking through his work and legacy, remaining a distinguished thinker in the field. He developed concepts, principles, and theory essential to a robust and fairminded conception of critical thinking. He founded the Center for Critical Thinking at Sonoma State University in 1980, followed by the Foundation for Critical Thinking. He developed concepts, principles, and theory essential to a robust and fairminded conception of critical thinking. He wrote eight books and more than 200 articles on the subject. He conducted extensive experimentation with teaching tactics and strategies, devising, among other things, novel ways to engage students in rigorous self-assessment.
Dr. Linda Elder is an educational psychologist and internationally recognized authority on critical thinking who has taught both psychology and critical thinking at the college level. She remains the President of the Foundation for Critical Thinking and the executive director of the Center for Critical Thinking for 25 years. She has a special interest in the relation of thought and emotion, as well as the stages of critical thinking development. Dr. Elder coauthored, with her long-time colleague Dr. Richard Paul, four books on critical thinking as well as 23 titles found in their Thinker's Guide Library.

What if I've already tried other thinking strategies and it didn't work?
That is a common problem that I had and we hear often when people come to The Foundation for Critical Thinking. There has not been a presentable Critical Thinking theory with a framework that has proved indefeasable than the Paul/Elder Framework for Critical Thinking. You will find that these Critical Thinking foundations will sustain you and be the framework you lean on continually for all reasoning.
How do I know if I'm ready for this?
I completely understand your question. I've been there.
You're ready if you're tired of being stuck on the same hamster wheel patterns of thought and know that if you are capable of getting up in the morning day after day, you are capable of a new discipline that will be the foundation in all other areas of your life. I have absolutely no doubt you will grasp the concept of the critical thinking tools in the first session.
As you embark on your critical thinking journey, consider this universal truth: whatever else you may be able to escape, you can never esacpe your thinking.

What if I'm not sure this will work for MY specific situation?
When we look deeply into the Barriers that impede critical thinking, we need to learn about our natural tendency towards bad habits of thought and what we are striving for: good habits of thought. At whatever level you think, you need to recognize that you can learn to think better. Creative improvement is the end for which critical thinkers strive. The 12 sessions are built specifically to set realistic expectations to maintain momentum and excitement.
Is it really worth the investment?
I understand fully, the question posed to me was "Are you worth the investment?"
This is a foundational long term personal investment that will, when taken seriously in practice, will enhance the quality of life in all areas.
In our study sessions you will see that "the quality of our life and that of what we produce, make, or build, depends precisely on the quality of our thought. Shoddy thinking is costly, both in money and in quality of life. Excellence in thought, however, must be systematically cultivated." (The Miniature Guide to Critical Thinking ~ Concepts and Tools)

What's your coaching style/approach?
I'm direct, warm, and deeply invested in the personal growth and excitement people experience when they begin to conciously connect and interrelate the critical thinking foundations. I leave all the jokes to my husband as he is way better at it than me, but I have learned to laught at myself and take life at it's curiosity. I meet you where you are and together I will help you to break free and take command of poor quality reasoning and limiting beliefs so that you become a well cultivated critical thinker.
What if I need to reschedule a session?
Life happens! Just give me at least 24 hours notice and we'll reschedule. If you need to cancel with less notice, we'll work it out on a case-by-case basis, though last-minute cancellations may forfeit that session depending on the circumstances. This will all be disclosed in your contract.
Do you offer a free consulation/discovery call?
Yes! I offer a FREE 30 minute Discovery call where we'll discuss your goals, challenges, and whether we're a good fit to work together. There's no pressure or obligation - just an honest conversation about where you are and where you want to go. If it feels right for both of us, we'll talk about next steps.
Do you work with people outside of your location/timezone?
Yes! I am able to work with clients all over the world. All sessions are virtual via Zoom, and I'm happy to find a time that works across time zones. I'm based in MDT Alberta, Canada (GMT-6) and typically coach between 9am to 4pm.
What if I want to continue working together after the program ends?
Many clients choose to continue to engage in critical thinking within the Critical Thinking Study group. We meet every 2 weeks and engage in current events, book studies, and many self-actualizing insights using the critical thinking foundations. But, if you prefer a more personal collaboration, I'm here to support you as long as it's valuable.
What happens if we're not a good fit?
If after our discovery call we both don't feel like it's a good fit, I'll be honest with you and I hope you'll do the same. I want you to work with someone who's right for your needs, If that's not me, I'm happy to point you in another direction if I can.
