Matt Gowan Coaching

Leadership & Career Coaching

About

I provide leadership and career coaching to experienced professionals, alongside tailored coaching services for organisations, drawing on an extensive background in executive leadership, recruitment and diversity & inclusion.

For individuals, coaching provides an opportunity to explore leadership challenges, career transitions and professional development. Whether you're taking on new responsibilities, navigating difficult workplace relationships, reconsidering your career direction or looking to make more deliberate choices about your working life, our conversations are shaped by what matters to you.

For organisations, I offer tailored coaching for new, emerging and established leaders, supporting individual development alongside organisational objectives. The focus may include leadership effectiveness, workplace relationships, communication, decision-making and navigating organisational change.

Whatever brings you to coaching, I invite you to bring your whole self,  including your triumphs, challenges, and aspirations. Whether you're facing a specific challenge or simply recognising that something needs to change, a conversation is a good place to start.

Testimonials

"I valued the genuine, non-judgemental presence Matt brought to our coaching conversations. He created an environment where I could think openly, challenge my own assumptions and explore what was really going on without feeling directed or evaluated. His authenticity, attentive listening and thoughtful questions brought both depth and clarity to the experience. I would be very comfortable recommending him as a coach."

- Sandip, Brisbane

"When we started 3 months ago, I felt stuck and unsure of my direction. Now I feel like I have clear values in integrity and clarity, and a much stronger sense of who I am professionally and who I want to be. Matt pushed me past the quick fixes and into the harder conversations. That made the difference. Thank you Matt for your patience, your sharp questions and for making it easy to be honest. Looking forward to finishing strong in the weeks ahead."

- Georgia, Melbourne

"Having known Matt Gowan in a professional capacity for years in the disability employment space, I recently engaged him as a career coach, and the experience has been exceptional. Over the past six months, Matt has provided a safe, highly effective framework that helps me process my ideas, recognise patterns, and map out my future path. His approach is professional, organised, and serious, yet delightfully flexible and encouraging. Working with him is genuine hard work, but it consistently leaves me feeling deeply accomplished by the end of each session. If you want to change course or fine-tune where you're headed, I strongly recommend connecting with Matt to make it happen."

Frequently Asked Questions

What actually happens in a coaching session?
It’s a structured, confidential sounding board. You bring whatever is currently on your plate, such as a difficult team dynamic, a career move you’re weighing up, feeling flat in your role, or a transition into a bigger remit. My role isn't to evaluate you or tell you what to do. It’s to ask the questions that help you cut through the noise, challenge your own blind spots, and work out your next move with clarity.
Who do you typically work with?
Most of my clients fall into two groups:

Senior executives and emerging leaders who are navigating a significant step-up, dealing with complex stakeholder environments, or feeling disconnected from their work and figuring out what’s next.

Organisations wanting to support their managers with practical leadership capability, better team engagement, and the confidence to handle tough conversations.
Do we just talk about work, or does life come into it?
You don’t stop being a person when you log on at 9 AM. While our focus is typically anchored in your professional role and career, issues like stress, work-life boundaries, values, and personal priorities naturally come up. You don't have to keep up a workplace facade in our conversations. We deal with whatever is actually impacting your life, performance and head space.
What is the typical format & time commitment?
Most sessions are held online via video, usually running for 60 minutes every two weeks. This spacing gives you enough space to respond to ideas or actions and reflect between sessions. Engagements typically run across 3 to 6 months depending on what you're working toward.
What’s your background?
Before coaching, I spent years in executive leadership, recruitment, and diversity & inclusion. I understand the pressures of senior leadership, how hiring decisions are made, how corporate politics operate, and how easy it is to be successful on one level while feeling deep uncertainty on another.

I also have lived experience of redundancy, navigating career pivots and founding a start-up social enterprise. Outside of coaching, I volunteer in the community sector and am a passionate advocate for disability inclusion.
How do we know if we’ll work well together?
Chemistry matters. If you don't feel comfortable being completely candid with me, coaching may not work.

We start with a straightforward 20–30 minute conversation. You tell me what’s going on, we talk through how I work, and we both decide if it makes sense to partner together. If it's a fit, we set up a session plan. If it's not, I'll happily point you toward someone or something else that fits better.
Are you formally qualified?
Yes. I hold a Graduate Certificate of Applied Coaching from the Australian College of Applied Psychology (ACAP University College).

My training is recognised by the International Coaching Federation (ICF) at Level 2 - the educational standard for the Professional Certified Coach (PCC) credential - and I conduct all my coaching in accordance with the ICF Code of Ethics.
