Do I need a Motor Carrier Authority (MC)?
You Need an MC Authority If You:
✅ Transport goods for hire across state lines (interstate commerce)
✅ Haul regulated commodities (freight that is subject to government oversight, such as general freight, household goods, and hazardous materials)
✅ Operate as a for-hire carrier (meaning you transport cargo for customers and get paid for it)
You Do NOT Need an MC Authority If You:
❌ Operate strictly within one state (intrastate commerce) (You will still need a USDOT number in most states)
❌ Are a private carrier hauling your own goods (not transporting goods for hire)
❌ Operate under another carrier’s authority (i.e., you lease onto another carrier who has active authority)
❌ Transport exempt commodities (such as unprocessed agricultural products, logs, or livestock—these do not require an MC number)
Other Considerations:
USDOT Number: Even if you don’t need an MC Authority, you might still need a USDOT number for identification and safety tracking.
Leased Operators: If you drive under someone else's authority, they handle compliance, but you won’t have full business control.
Insurance Requirements: Having an MC Authority means you must maintain liability and cargo insurance, which can be costly.
