Intentional Activities

live your truth, intentionally

About

Hi, I'm Dr. B...A licensed clinical psychologist who coaches. I use intentional activities to help you live your truth. Since graduating with a B.A. in Psychology, and earning an M.A. in Counseling and a Doctoral degree (Psy.D.), I have spent over 25 years working with clients in therapy and students in the classroom.

I’m a wife, mother, daughter, friend, author and consummate professional.

Figuring life out—whether career or personal—isn't always linear. When the curve balls come, it’s my goal to help you maximize your strengths and take your best swing. And if you miss, I’ll work with you to try again.

My work is rooted in positive psychology, the study of making life more fulfilling. Equipped by my training with the Coaching and Positive Psychology (CaPP) Institute, I’m here to help. Let’s get started.

Have questions? Want to know more about executive coaching options that are tailor-made to fit your needs? Never hesitate to 'contact me' within the package of your interest, or email at [email protected].

Yours in Intention,

:)Barbara F. Shabazz, Psy.D., CPEC

Testimonials

When I began working with Dr. B one-one-one, she explained that therapy is great for dealing with past issues, and life coaching is more about finding yourself and building the life that you value. Which can be deeply uncomfortable work, or at least it was for me. But having Dr. B as a guiding light to help anchor me in building my intention into action. When I wanted to sink into a pit of shame and inaction, she has helped me find my footing to get myself out. No one can do our work for us, but finding the others also on that path is restorative. I will forever be grateful for Dr. B and the community she's cultivated.

Intentional Activities has been a godsend. Dr. Shabazz provides a comfortable, safe, and engaging space to express emotional and mental things that I sometimes do not know how to properly verbalize. She listens intently without judgment and provides actionable steps to take with intention. Her doctoral and clinical training allowed her quickly identify a concern that I addressed with my primary care physician. Having Dr. Shabazz on my team has been priceless. I highly recommend anyone dealing with life situations to engage with Dr. Shabazz.

Frequently Asked Questions

how does coaching work?
Most clients begin with a question via that contact form, a 60-minute session to understand the process and assess fit, or jump right in for a 90-minute session. Our sessions are conducted via telephone or teleconference. After the introductory session, my clients have the option to schedule subsequent sessions as needed/recommended.

Executive coaching is also an option. It is tailor-made to fit your specific needs. Inquire at [email protected] for any questions and a scheduled consult.
how is coaching different than therapy?
My training in clinical psychology leads me to believe that both approaches aim to help people in their efforts to grow, master their problems, and become more effective in their lives. But coaching should not be a substitute for issues that warrant true counseling or psychotherapy. Coaching focuses on where you are presently and where you are headed, with a goal of helping you gain clarity about your vision, eliminate obstacles to your success, accelerate the pace of personal growth and achieve results that empower you to live your best life - professionally and personally. We can focus on any area of your life: Relationships, Finances, Spiritual life, Work and Business, or Physical Health and Environments. If it appears that there is an issue for which you may need therapy, I will suggest it. With the support of a therapist, some individuals choose to engage in coaching and counseling simultaneously.

If you believe your needs are more aligned with a therapeutic approach, I welcome you to compare additional options at: www.therapywithdrbpllc.com
how much are the sessions?
Coaching rates vary, based on the dynamic needs of the clients. Check out the 'Packages' to see what the current and relevant offerings are.
do you accept insurance?
Coaching isn’t covered by insurance companies (yet :). However, some companies may allow it to be covered with FSA funds (always worth exploring with your employer).
how is Intentional Activities different?
With over 25+ years experience of facilitating change in the lives of clients and students, I can say with an exceptional level of competence, that I understand human behavior, and have the tools to equip you with what you need. In your work with Intentional Activities, you will find that I will help you to identify your current strengths/supports and use them as a point of departure in capitalizing on your action plan and goal attainment. I am excited to see where you'd like to start!
how do I know that coaching is working?
I tailor my approach to your individual needs and goals. The coaching agenda really comes from you. Most of the magic happens between our appointments. Sessions are based on a continual process of assessment, goal setting, action steps and further assessment. Our sessions will emphasize action, accountability, and follow-through. Your growth and development will be based on individually-initiated change.
