Dr Elizabeth Roberts

Make Peace With Food

About

Hi! I’m Elizabeth. I’m a state registered dietitian in the U.K. and I specialise in eating disorders and other problems of appetite.

Have you or your child been diagnosed with anorexia, bulimia or another type of eating disorder? Or perhaps you are tired of the dieting treadmill? Fed up of weight cycling, of dieting and then overeating, feeling bad about yourself, and starting a diet over again, vowing to do it better this time. Maybe you are feeling out of control with your eating, or stuck in a rut of orthorexia and rigid food rules that you are afraid to break? Perhaps you are recovering from an eating disorder and don’t know how to eat more flexibly or no longer know if you are hungry or full or what they are meant to feel like? Perhaps you have started a GLP-1 and don’t know if you are doing the right thing or are worried about what comes next. I can help.

I can help you renourish from anorexia, or support your child to get back to healthy, and I can be there for you as you take your first steps towards normal eating. I can support you as you start with the difficult process of weight restoring and getting back to healthy, but also when the time comes to return to a more intuitive style of eating. I can help you learn to tune in to your body’s wisdom and appetite to tell you what and how much to eat. I can support you with practical aspects, like meal planning and problem solving, to improve nutrition. I can help you start to eat more flexibly, to trust your body to tell you what to eat and to tune in to your body’s wisdom and appetite.

I am trained in the Maudsley FT-AN approach to adolescent eating disorders, and also a certified intuitive eating counsellor. I work with both young people and adults. I regularly see people with appetite problems related to a range of mental health problems, including psychosis and schizophrenia. I have supported many people using GLP-1s and take an entirely non-judgemental position on their use, because I understand the science of appetite regulation. I am well versed in the emerging biological science of eating disorders, and many people I have helped and their families have found it empowering to understand why some of the feelings and behaviours might be happening for them.

I have worked in several areas of clinical practice over the years (including bowel problems, coeliac disease, allergies and diabetes), which means I have a lot of experience and can help you navigate most nutritional problems that often run alongside problems of impaired appetite regulation. I also take a keen interest in interoception, how this links to problems of eating and practices to work that muscle! The insular cortex is my favourite part of the brain.

I also happen to happen to LOVE nutrition, science and learning about how and why we eat and what can go wrong along the way. Check out some of my blog posts to hear more about the interesting research I have been reading. There I also talk about what this might mean for you and the difficulties you might be facing right now.

Testimonials

"It was helpful to see Elizabeth to support our daughter to make the changes she needs. It was helpful to both me and my child to have a fresh look at how to think about and view food/eating. Both during early re-feeding and maintaining of weight. As a parent, I needed the support early on to know what I should be doing but perhaps more crucially, towards the end of treatment, for my child (and me) to feel able to eat more normally and think about food in a more positive, less scary way."

- Ella

"Early contact with Elizabeth made a difference. Not all children are the same, and having a personalised eating plan for our daughter was very helpful. We have found she struggled to put on weight with a standard eating plan and so having more personalised advice on how to increase her food intake without distressing her too much was great. We have found this has barely been covered in the normal CAMHS sessions we have."

- Bernice

"Families and young people often trust you and your expertise in a way that they just can't trust anyone else."

- CAMHS worker

"Very positive meetings. Dr Roberts put me at ease with things and pointed things out that I did not know. I am eating much better now, but there is still a way to go."

- Emma

"10/10. Very helpful in the way that it helped my daughter understand nutrition and why the body needs certain food learning about intuitive eating."

- Pam C

"You are always well informed about the evidence base and research. You are incredibly passionate about your field and that comes through in your work. You're clear and calm with families even when it's tricky."

- Paediatrician

"The meal plan and adapting the plan when things were difficult made a difference. It gave my daughter the confidence that she needed in what I was serving and it was a safe amount etc. Appointments with Elizabeth were also helpful now as we are trying to break a very bad cycle that we have got in."

- Sarah H

"You bring a different perspective that can help breakthrough when patients and their families are stuck. Your deep knowledge and skills in dietetics and of the current research is so helpful to us all."

- Support worker

"She is clear thinking and thorough in her work, and this approach means that families and young people are reassured by the advice that she gives."
