Life Transition Coach

About

We know that everyone goes through life transitions, some more significant than others, and navigating them can be challenging.  Some transitions are natural and expected while others are unplanned and take us by surprise.  What often makes these times of change complicated to manage is that there is both structural and logistical changes to our lives but an internal struggle that we have to experience and maneuver as well.  It is usually these emotional and cognitive impacts that are the most difficult to address.  This is where and why a life coach can help!

My name is Chris Larrick.  I have been in education for over 35 years and have counseled, supervised, managed, and coached teenage, young adult, and adult clients in a variety of settings over that time. I am a certified master coach and life coach and working as a counselor in Washington, D.C.  I have a master's degree in counseling and a doctorate in education, certified in Youth Mental Health First Aid, and trained as a mediator.  In addition, I have an extensive background in social emotional learning and executive functioning, served as a principal for over 13 years, and was a consultant and leadership trainer contracted through the DOD.

I have been coaching local clients in a specialized practice but now offering my services to a broader audience.  My focus is with people who are going through some type of life transition and/or are just feeling stuck!  This includes adults navigating a death or loss, an employment change, a separation or divorce, relocation, or someone looking to reinvent themselves.  I also work with younger clients who are graduating from high school and/or college, who are trying to make decisions about next steps, who may need help with goal setting and life skill development, and/or those who have an end goal but having difficulty finding their path forward.  What all these small and large transitions have in common include uncertainty, increased self-reflection, instability, and decision fatigue---all things that warrant getting a coach for support and structure as you search for meaning and purpose.

I know firsthand about loss, trauma, change, life transitions, and the importance of getting support and guidance from someone along the way.  Having grown up as the youngest in a large family, I experienced and witnessed a variety of significant "transitions" including the death of my parents independent of one another before I left for college, a sibling being disabled from an automobile accident, losing a brother to suicide, and many other changes to and around my extended family structure to include divorce, relocation, and substance use.  I have also raised two children through high school and college and been challenged with retiring and finding new work and meaning in my life in the last few years as well.

As a result of working in the mental health and wellness space for much of my career, I have taken advantage of finding counselors and coaches along the way to support my own journey and to help me navigate challenging periods in my life.  I can attest to the power of finding someone you feel comfortable talking to, who you can trust, and who can draw out a better and more motivated version of yourself.  So, whether in crisis or just feeling stagnant, a life coach may be one of your best resources!

As a transition coach, I can leverage my training as a counselor to first help you manage the emotions you are feeling related to this time in your life.  I will partner with you to set achievable goals, identifying your strengths and available resources, and help you navigate what you believe to be your biggest hurdles and roadblocks.  Finally, I can aide you in creating an actionable plan while helping you hold yourself more accountable for positive change!

Testimonials

Chris helped my daughter after she graduated college. She was trying to find a job but was having a hard time figuring out where to start and was really feeling pretty dejected. She enjoyed working with him and looked forward to their sessions together even though some of the conversations were difficult. She needed someone other than my husband and I to help her get moving in a positive direction.

- Laura, IT Specialist, Washington, D.C.

I worked with Chris at a time when I was going through several transitions in my life to include moving, a shift in employment, and changes to my household. I needed someone to talk to who I could trust and he was highly recommended by a work colleague. Chris is a great listener, very calm, and was always reassuring during our sessions even when complicated issues were being discussed.

- Joel, Sales Manager, Reston, Virginia

I was recovering from substance use and abuse and was participating in marriage counseling with my wife at the time. I was required to work with someone outside of these sessions for my own personal growth. Chris was recommended by a therapist and I met with him multiple times over a year or two period as a result. He helped me identify and prioritize goals and get me focused on taking personal responsibility for my life.

Frequently Asked Questions

Why would someone choose to work with me as a life coach?
I have a unique professional background that spans over 35 years.  In addition to coaching, I have worked as a counselor in a variety of settings, served as a principal for over 13 years, been a teacher and tutor, and served as a consultant and leadership trainer.  I have worked with a wide range of ages to include teenagers, young adults, and adults so bring a wealth of experiences to my coaching sessions.

As a result, I bring an integrative approach to our sessions that blends coaching, counseling, teaching, and consulting.  Having worked across age groups, I can adapt my approach to meet client needs.  Whether someone is trying to gain clarity, build confidence, or move forward in their personal or professional life, I can provide grounded support that is both thoughtful and results-oriented.

How is coaching different from counseling and therapy?
Professional counselors and therapists assess, diagnose, and treat mental and emotional disorders.  They address past trauma, focusing on healing, while understanding and changing client behavior.

Coaching is more future oriented.  The coaching process is designed to help clients identify and prioritize goals, to navigate roadblocks, and to create a system of accountability.
What does the coaching cycle look like?
Q3 stands for question, qualify, and quest.  First, through questioning, we will discuss your motivations for coaching, personal goals, and expected outcomes.  Then we will qualify all of the resources and roadblocks in your life.  What resources do you have to help?  What is still in your way?  Finally, we will set new goals and create an actionable plan--your new quest for change and accountability.
Are sessions online or in person?
All sessions will be facilitated on Zoom.  Once you book an appointment, the following day you will receive a Zoom link for the scheduled time slot.
Are coaching sessions recorded?
No.  For your privacy and confidentiality, no sessions will be recorded.
If I live in a different time zone, can I still sign up?
Definitely!  When you schedule your appointment, my calendar will adjust to your timezone for seamless scheduling.  If you need a particular time that is not readily available, please reach out to me at [email protected].
Do you offer refunds?
No.  I do not offer refunds for any of the coaching packages.  Coaching requires a commitment from both parties and carries the expectation that clients are ready to commit and engage in the coaching process.
Why are more and more people hiring life coaches?
One main reason is that life is busier and more complex than ever!  Our world is a pretty frantic place and people are more stressed and anxious and just emotionally exhausted so desperate for some help.  Additionally, coaching is more accessible now and normalized so people are looking beyond traditional methods of support.

People aren't hiring life coaches because they are broken or because something is wrong with them; they are hiring coaches to get motivated, to get unstuck, to get moving, and to find clarity which is often hard to do by yourself!
