POSITIVE PSYCHOLOGY & OPTIMAL FUNCTIONING COACH ~ Strengthening and enhancing what people carry into adversity

About

Serving wildfire, aviation and aerial firefighting professionals and their families to develop optimal functioning through challenge and high-stakes experiences—so energy, identity and values remain intact and life continues to hold and flourish.

Optimal functioning is not the absence of adversity. It is the ability to navigate challenge, perform under pressure, and remain connected to who you are and what matters most.

Many professionals operating in safety-critical environments become highly skilled at managing difficult situations in the moment. What is often missing is the opportunity to process, integrate, and make sense of the experiences that accumulate across a career and life.

This work focuses on Operational Integration—helping people process and place significant experiences from both professional and personal life so they can be carried without interfering with performance, relationships, identity, or long-term wellbeing.

To support this, I use a structured approach called The Recalibration Process™—a practical method for strengthening the capacities that support optimal functioning when things feel off, overwhelming, or difficult to carry.

The goal is not to eliminate adversity. The goal is to strengthen what people carry into it.

For Professionals in Wildfire, Aviation and Aerial Firefighting

I work with professionals who want to sustain high levels of performance while integrating the experiences that come with demanding roles.

Many professionals in safety-critical environments are highly capable of managing difficult situations in the moment, yet have had little opportunity to fully process and integrate what accumulates across a career.

Over time, these experiences can begin to affect clarity, energy, relationships, or sense of purpose—often subtly, and even while performance remains strong.

This work provides a structured space to work through those experiences so they can be carried without eroding judgment, identity, or long-term effectiveness.

The Work

In safety-critical professions, difficult experiences are often carried privately while performance continues.

Without space to integrate those experiences, they can accumulate beneath the surface—impacting decision-making, relationships, and overall capacity over time.

Operational Integration is the process of working through these experiences so they are understood, placed, and carried in a way that supports clarity, stability, and effective functioning.

This work is guided by The Recalibration Process™, which provides a clear, repeatable way to regain footing when things feel off or begin to accumulate.

The Recalibration Process™

A structured process for navigating disruption, regaining clarity, and moving forward with intention.

1. Stabilize
Create enough steadiness to think clearly and contain what is currently present.

2. Reclaim
Differentiate what is yours to carry, reconnect with your values and identity, and restore perspective.

3. Re-engage
Move forward with clarity, boundaries, and practical adjustments that support effective performance and wellbeing.

Foundations of the Work

This work is informed by evidence-based principles from:

  • Positive Psychology
  • Humanistic Psychology
  • Self-Determination Theory
  • Posttraumatic Growth
  • Stress inoculation and Resilience Research
  • Strengths-based and Performance Psychology

Together, these fields examine how people develop, adapt, and maintain optimal functioning in the face of challenge, adversity, and high-stakes demands.

They highlight the importance of strengthening the psychological capacities that support sustainable wellbeing, effective performance, resilience, and human flourishing over time.

Three core psychological needs consistently emerge as foundational:

Autonomy — maintaining a sense of agency within demanding environments

Competence — continuing to develop capability, confidence, and effectiveness

Relatedness — remaining connected to others, purpose, identity, and meaning

When these foundations are supported, people are better positioned to navigate adversity without losing themselves in the process.

Focus of the Work

This work supports professionals in:

  •  recognizing early signs of strain or misalignment
  •  integrating operational and life experiences that influence performance
  •  maintaining clarity in judgment and decision-making
  •  sustaining identity, meaning, and professional direction over time

This is not about stepping away from demanding roles.

It is about remaining effective within them—without losing yourself in the process.

Who This Work Is For

This work is often a strong fit for professionals who:

  •  hold significant responsibility in wildfire, aviation, aerial firefighting, emergency response, or other safety-critical roles
  •  are known as capable, dependable, and steady under pressure
  •  continue to perform well outwardly while noticing internal shifts
  •  carry experiences that have not had space to be fully integrated
  •  want to sustain performance without sacrificing clarity, identity, or meaning

Many come to this work not because something has gone wrong, but because they recognize the importance of integrating what they carry before the cost appears elsewhere.

Work With Children & Youth

Alongside my work with operational professionals, I support children and youth who are growing up in high-demand or high-uncertainty environments.

Many come from families connected to aviation, emergency services, and other operational fields where unpredictability and exposure to critical situations shape daily life.

This work focuses on helping young people understand and integrate their experiences early, so confidence, identity, and development remain strong.
Through age-appropriate coaching, they learn to:

  •  make sense of challenging experiences
  •  build resilience and confidence
  •  navigate uncertainty and change
  •  develop healthy perspectives on mistakes and setbacks
  •  strengthen identity and personal capability

When young people are supported early, they are far more likely to carry forward a strong, stable sense of self.

This is wisdom in action.

My Approach

My approach is grounded in experience within safety-critical operational environments, including helicopter-supported wildland firefighting, marine rescue and retrieval, and frontline first aid and clinic care with children and youth.

These environments shaped a deep understanding of how people perform under pressure, manage risk, and carry difficult experiences over time.

My coaching integrates positive psychology, resilience research, and strengths-based practice, alongside training accredited by the International Coaching Federation (ICF).

Across all populations, the focus remains consistent:
Helping people integrate what they carry so they can continue forward with clarity, stability, and a strong sense of who they are.

Philosophy

Adversity is an inevitable part of life.

Dysfunction does not have to be.

People can move through significant experiences without losing clarity, identity, values, or their ability to function effectively.

While struggle is a natural part of being human, many of the patterns that undermine wellbeing, relationships, and long-term effectiveness are neither fixed nor inevitable.

The pursuit of optimal functioning is the pursuit of freedom from unnecessary dysfunction.

When experiences are integrated well, they become part of a person's strength rather than a source of erosion.

This work is ultimately about strengthening the capacities that help people navigate adversity, remain effective under pressure, and build lives that continue to hold.
